Most of the mission trips I've been on have been through an organization called Appalachia Service Project. Their goal is to make homes warmer, safer, and drier. They serve in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
A number of these mission trips included adding safer exits onto homes, such as decks. Our team dug holes, set posts with cement, cut stringers for stairs, laid down boards, hammered nails, drilled in screws, and of course, sanded. But not only did we do construction, we also interacted with those who lived in these homes. Many of them were overcoming difficult times such as devestating storms, poverty, and loss of a job.
